Why do we gather on Sunday morning to worship?

I recently attended an Arkansas Baptist State Convention Worship Leader's Roundtable to listen to Dr. Joe Crider from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He asked us quite a few thought-provoking questions, but one that I appreciated the most was "Why do we gather on Sunday Morning to worship?" There were four points from our discussion that I believe can help us think about worship in an appropriate manner.

  1. To Glorify God
  • To Make the Invisible God, visible
    • God is a self-revealing God.
    • Use the Word of God to make the invisible visible.

  2. To Proclaim The Mysteries Of The Gospel
  • The Gospel should be celebrated throughout the entire worship service as the contour of the worship.

  3. To Respond To God's Revelation
  • Nothing can transform lives but the Word of God, through the Spirit of God.
  • God deals with his people in a rhythm, and that rhythm is of His revelation and His people responding.

  4. To Step Into What Is Really Real
  • Christian worship should be designed and enacted in a way that helps people make sense of their lives.
  • We cannot do this effectively without the Word of God.

There is a lot to unpack throughout these different thoughts. I encourage you to stop by my office sometime so we can have a more in-depth conversation! Thanks for spending some time reflecting on the importance of worship within the context of the body of Christ!
